make install fails (r5735) since the OSF install program doesn't support
the -d option. automake installations avoid this problem by
using a mkinstalldirs script.

I am not familiar with this. Who can provide a patch file?

can "install -d" be replaced with "mkdir -p"??

Fixed in Subversion repository.

Please verify on as many command line based build environments as possible! OS X 10.4 works, and so does Ubuntu 7.04 Linux.

Undid changes and restored state to "new"> Iwill leave this fix to someone more experienced with build scripts.

My suggestion:
Line 176 in configure.in, add:
            INSTALL="`pwd`/install-sh -c"
to preset the install script

Fixed in Subversion repository.

Using the slower 'install-sh' on OSF now. Please verify the fix.
