All the other patches seem to be caused by the same visibility issue. Although "something" is protected it is not visible by a class included in a subclass. I'm not a C++ "guru" but I'd guess that this is either valid in a later C++ spec. or the old compiler is incorrect. Hence I wouldn't want to change anything in these patches.
@michaelbaeuerle If you agree I will close this issue with only one of your patches applied. I'm waiting for your comment on #939 (comment) though.
