Under Debian, I've turned root with su and then ran a Wayland-enabled FLTK app. The app runs without apparent trouble.
I notice now an interesting detail : when run as root, the app looses the minimize button of its titlebar. See attached where the same binary file runs as regular user at left and as root at right :
