Regarding Wayland and running GUIs as root, it sure seems like they're not gonna allow it. That was a design decision.
Under Debian, I've turned root with su and then ran a Wayland-enabled FLTK app. The app runs without apparent trouble. ps -ef shows root is the user of the corresponding process. xwininfo shows the FLTK app's window is not managed by X11.
