Regarding Wayland and running GUIs as root, it sure seems like they're not gonna allow it. That was a design decision. Apparently on linux there's something called polkit (aka. 'policy kit') that allows GUI apps to do things as root without running as root. Some sort of admin:// prefix on files and I'm not sure what else, but see the wikipedia page on polkit for an intro.

I'm just looking into this myself, as I was going down the rabbit hole of 'wayland guis can't run as root' in this thread:

..which points in lots of directions, but sounds important as apparently this Wayland transition is being treated as the "line in the sand", the end of continuing to allow GUIs to run as root, the official edict being fix your broken code already.
