Do the preferences files have portability across platforms with different endian-ness?
Spontaneously I would say yes. Numeric values are stored as ASCII text, and binary values are stored as a list of two-character hex strings byte by byte. It's the user's responsibility if that binary block needs to be byte-flipped.
