While this discourse produced a satisfactory workaround to my problem, the original issue actually dealt with the way in which Fl_Tree_Item::draw() handles the output of Fl_Tree_Item::draw_item_content() , when Fl_Tree_Item has an assigned widget. In my opinion, the behavior of Fl_Tree_Item::draw() , in that context, did not reconcile with expected behavior. Moreover, the behavior gave rise to a novel limitation, which generated a lot of discussion about potential workarounds. Ultimately, @erco77 has hinted at a potential RFE and I have instead suggested a revision of the Fl_Tree_Item::draw() method. If the maintainers are satisfied that neither are needed, then the issue can be closed.
