seems to me that all this code can be put into Posix and then
(if necessary) the Darwin one can override anything it needs

+1 if that's the case.
But I figure there must be a reason, perhaps the commonality of
POSIX
support, what little there problem is, on e.g. Windows. But I'm
not sure..
