Does anyone have a better suggestion? Or are you all using cloud-based
encrypted password manager systems anyway rather than relying on the
local system/browser to remember passwords for you?

So... Motivated by this discussion, I did go looking for a TOTP app.
Initially I went for FreeOTP as Albrecht suggested, but then, reading various posts I found some folks grumbling about how hard it all was to transition to a new phone... And *this* phone is getting older...
So, after yet more reading, I actually switched to Aegis Authenticator, which I note you also considered. My reasoning was basically that you are able to export the key database and import it on a new phone...
I looked at their design description and it's pretty convincing though the key length that secures the database could be longer...

As to storing passwords and recovery keys, I'm using f-secure key, FWIW, and that's been OK so far!
