Sorry for the delay, I don't think you annoyed anyone, but perhaps nobody knew the answer right away. I believe your proposal could be a useful enhancement, so feel free to reopen the issue if you still think you may have a need for it.

That said, Fl_Preferences is pretty complicated and there's only one FLTK maintainer (@MatthiasWM) who knows all the details (he wrote it). Maybe he'll chime in and help because I mentioned him.

OTOH, if this doesn't happen and you reopen the issue, I may take a look at it later.
