I have an Fl_Output widget that is displaying an "insertion caret" (i.e. a ^ only lower).

	Yes, in an output widget, that caret is an indicator for the 'mark';
	the starting point of a selection. This allows one to do a copy selection
	operation purely with keyboard navigation, eg:

	     - Use arrow keys to find a position in the output text to select
             - Hold down shift while hitting the arrows to extend out a selection
             - Hit ^C to copy the selection to the paste buffer

In any case, I would like to get rid of it since the field is for output only.

	You can, as Ian mentioned, but if you do, you disable your users
	from being able to use keyboard nav to make text selections.
	(Mouse selections should still work).
